Welcome To The Parent's Corner!

At AO365, we are constantly learning and developing new strategies to manage our daily autistic challenges, and we want to share as much informative data and resources as we can. Parent's Corner is a page where you can get tips to help you prepare for IEP meetings; links to articles for different treatments and therapy suggestions, and contact information to service providers and other parent referrals. If there is a subject or service that you would like to see here, let us know and we will work towards providing information to fit your needs. We strive to help you and your loved one achieve their Maximum Potential and Developmental Goals

IEP Checklist

Go into your child's IEP meeting prepared and with your own agenda! It is important to assess the needs and the tangible goals of achievement so that you can set your child up for academic success! Here are a few tips.

Home Observations

Based on your own observations at home, create a journal documenting your child's developmental strengths and weaknesses (or purchase one of ours). Determine what parameter the school has to work within, then outline the "key elements" you would like to work on for that school year!

School Services

Be specific about how you are hoping your child's school services will help him/her and request documents to show how they are going about providing them and the methods used. You can maximize their goal achievements by working in unison with these service providers. Also, if you are utilizing outsourced services, you can share this information with them and possibly get more recommendations!

Key:

If you are using outsourced services ask your provider if he/she can attend an IEP meeting with you! Try to reserve the time away from their practice by asking them to attend during the topic talks you think (or the provider thinks) better fits their contribution. Also share your child's IEP results with them to see if they can incorporate activities that may help with school and home goals!

Take Notes

It is important that you not miss a beat when meeting with the staff and administration to discuss the services, and the expected results of such! Don't go in thinking you will remember everything discussed or that you can depend solely on the words spoken, give yourself every advantage to knowing and understanding what the recommendations are, and the modules being used to provide your child with F.A.P.E. (Fair and Appropriate Public Education) !

IEP Meeting Questions

Be prepared to ask questions at your child's IEP meeting, specifically if this is your first! You need to have a clear understanding on the services your child will receive so listen intensely, and ask questions! Here are a few examples:

Listen To Every Detail

So many things will be outlined and shared during your IEP meetings so it is important to listen to every detail given. Again, taking notes helps record data you may want to question later!

Two Sets of Questions

Make sure you have a list of questions for yourself as well as the attendees of the meeting! For example, during the meeting when the services your child will receive are being determined and outlined, review your notes and ask yourself if you agree fully to the suggestions, or if there were questions from a previous meeting or something noted in his/her progress report that you had questions about, be prepared with those questions and note the questions for the following meeting.  Our IEP Journals are filled with helpful questions and space for notes! Save yourself some time and reserve one and be prepared for the next school year!

Therapeutic Services

Have a separate set of questions for your child's therapist/specialist. Ask your outsourced service provider if there are any questions you should ask as well. If you don't have one, google treatments suggestions for some ideas.

Compare

Using your checklist, determine what your end of school year questions should be (also using progress chart) and if any amendments are warranted for the next school year.
